Policeman killed, another hurt in Zamboanga shooting

ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE - A rookie policeman was killed, while another was seriously wounded when they were attacked by three unidentified armed men in Sirawi town here, police said Saturday

Police Officer 1 Michael Jay Castro and PO2 Joemar Fuentes were waylaid in Poblacion village on Friday after buying refreshments from the neighborhood store, said Senior Superintendent Edwin Wagan, the provincial police chief.

Castro died from multiple gunshot wounds. Fuentes, who suffered similar injuries, was being treated at the hospital, Wagan said.

Wagan said relatives of a drug pusher who was killed in a recent police operation in the town could be behind the attack even as the two were not involved in that incident.
